The old town, also called the Medina, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 and is one of the most beautiful and relaxed medinas in all of Morocco. Unlike in Marrakech, you won't be constantly approached by vendors here. No wonder hippies and artists like Jimi Hendrix loved the city back in the 1960s. Getting there is easy: simply take the bus from Marrakech—we traveled with Supratours, about 3 hours, from around €8. If you want to fly directly from Germany: Ryanair offers direct flights from Düsseldorf Weeze. Accommodation tip: Definitely book a riad in the Medina—we explain in the video what a riad is and why it's the best experience in Essaouira. We think two full days are ideal to see the highlights and really soak up the city's unique vibe.
