Lintasan Sejarah Kota Manado Sulawesi Utara

Manado is the capital of North Sulawesi Province which has a long history as a center of trade, culture, and the spread of Christianity in eastern Indonesia. In the 16th century, this area was fought over by the Portuguese and Spanish because of its strategic position on the spice shipping route. The Dutch then controlled Manado in the 17th century through the VOC and built Fort Amsterdam. During the colonial period, Manado developed into a center of education and the birthplace of national movement figures from Sulawesi. During the independence period, this city played an important role in the political dynamics of Eastern Indonesia. Today, Manado is known as a multicultural city and the main gateway to the Bunaken tourism area.
