In the late 1950s, West Papua (then Dutch New Guinea) was still under Dutch rule. This original documentary from the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNN) provides a firsthand look at the lives of the navy, Marine Corps, and Naval Aviation Service serving in Papua before the conflict over territory with Indonesia began. The video features the warships Hr.Ms. Drenthe and Hr.Ms. Johan Maurits van Nassau, Firefly aircraft, Martin Mariner amphibious aircraft, Marine Corps landing exercises, patrols in the Papuan jungle, health services to remote villages, and the daily lives of Royal Netherlands Navy personnel in Hollandia (Jayapura), Biak, Manokwari, Sorong, Fakfak, Raja Ampat, and Lake Wissel (now Lake Paniai). The entire narrative is based on original documentary footage from the 1950s to provide a more complete historical picture of Papua during Dutch rule.
