Erich Mielke: „Ich liebe doch alle, alle Menschen“ 1989 | DDR, Stasi, Volkskammer

On November 13, 1989, Erich Mielke, the Minister for State Security, who had just resigned from office, speaks before the GDR People's Chamber and answers critical questions from MPs about the extent of Stasi spying. His attempts at justification are met with loud laughter. He is interrupted in a particularly striking way by an interjection from a CDU member of parliament. He asks Mielke to address not only the "comrades" but everyone present. He then utters the legendary words with which the politician is still remembered today: "I do love everyone, all people... Well, I do love... I do stand up for it."
