Prenzlauer Berg zur DDR-Zeit | Ostberlin 1979

This West German television report documents the East Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg in 1979. As a classic working-class and proletariat district, developed during the imperial era and marked by social conflicts during the Weimar Republic, Prenzlauer Berg at this time is marked by its history and, at the same time, undergoing change. Dilapidated old buildings, narrow courtyards, and faded signs of former shops characterize the cityscape, while the first measures of urban renewal become visible, such as renovated facades at Arnimplatz and new buildings along Greifswalder Straße. Street life on Schönhauser Allee with its elevated railway, shops, and passersby, scenes from the Prater Gardens with music and dance, and the Käthe Kollwitz Memorial at Kollwitzplatz convey a multifaceted picture of everyday life in an East Berlin district before reunification.
