"She turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus." Mary Magdalene stared at Him but did not recognize Him. The two disciples from Emmaus walked with Him for eleven kilometers without knowing who He was. Seven disciples on the Sea of ​​Galilee saw Him on the shore but did not identify Him. People who lived with Jesus for three years, every day, don't recognize him after the resurrection. The explanation heard in every homily is either psychological—they were shocked, destroyed by grief—or apologetic—the glorified body was different. Both contain some truth. Both miss the point. Because when we look at the Greek text, the evangelists aren't describing a perceptual problem among the disciples. They're saying something much more radical about the Risen One himself. In this video, we explore three Greek verbs that overturn the current reading: 🔹 In John 20:16, Jesus does not call Mary by the Greek name Μαρία, but by the Aramaic name Μαριάμ—the name he called her before Easter. And she responds Ραββουνί, also Aramaic. Recognition occurs when the Risen One pronounces his proper name, in that language, in that way. 🔹 In Luke 24:16, the verb ἐκρατοῦντο is a divine passive: "their eyes were held"—by whom? By God. It's not that the disciples were confused: there is a deliberate divine action that prevents recognition. And in v. 31, the same passive is reversed: διηνοίχθησαν, "they were opened"—again by God, precisely at the moment of the breaking of the bread. 🔹 In John 21:7, it is not Peter who recognizes first, but the beloved disciple. And Peter recognizes through his brother's testimony: "It is the Lord." Three verbs. Three ways of Easter recognition: personal (the name), sacramental (the breaking of the bread), ecclesial (the testimony). They are not alternatives—they are the three dimensions in which, even today, every Sunday, the Risen One makes himself known. And there is a pastoral consequence I want to state clearly: when we experience aridity, doubt, periods when Christ seems absent, it is not a fault. ἐκρατοῦὄο. Even the two on the road to Emmaus, walking beside Him in person, did not recognize Him until He wanted.
