VAJONT 1963: La valle che un'onda distrusse in pochi minuti

On October 9, 1963, at 10:39 PM, an autumn evening like any other ended in a matter of minutes. At the top of a narrow valley in the Belluno area stood one of the world's tallest dams, the pride of an Italy that believed in progress. But opposite the dam was a sick mountain, Mount Toc. That night, its entire flank—over 250 million cubic meters of rock—plunged into the lake in 45 seconds, and a gigantic wave overtopped the dam, obliterating Longarone and the villages in the valley. Nearly two thousand people died. This is their story, told from the last normal evening until dawn after the catastrophe. But it is also something more uncomfortable: because Vajont was no surprise. The danger was known, measured, even reported in the newspapers and brought to court. The mountain had already warned. And the valley went to sleep anyway. The dam, meanwhile, resisted everything: it is still there, intact, today. The masterpiece survived. The valley did not. A documentary to never forget, and to understand a truth that concerns us all: sometimes catastrophes don't come when we don't know. They come precisely when we know, and we choose to look elsewhere.
