ICLR Friday Forum: California WUI Code & Severity Maps (Sept 12, 2025)

On September 12, 2025 ICLR hosted a Friday Forum webinar titled 'California Wildland-Urban Interface Code & Severity Maps', led by Chief Frank Bigelow, Deputy Director of Community Wildfire Preparedness & Mitigation and Fire Engineering & Investigations, CAL FIRE. The California Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Code and Fire Hazard Severity Zone Maps are critical tools for mitigating wildfire risks in areas where urban development meets natural landscapes. The WUI Code establishes building and land-use standards to enhance fire resistance, focusing on materials, construction techniques, and defensible space requirements. Complementing the WUI code, Fire Hazard Severity Zone Maps classify regions based on wildfire hazard, guiding planning, zoning, and emergency response strategies. Together, these resources support public safety, reduce property damage, and protect ecosystems in California's fire-prone environments, addressing the growing challenges posed by climate change and urban expansion. Chief Frank Bigelow serves as the Deputy Director of Community Wildfire Preparedness & Mitigation and Fire Engineering & Investigations at CAL FIRE. Since starting his career in 2004 as a Fire Fighter I, he has progressed through various leadership roles, including Battalion Chief, Deputy Chief, and Staff Chief. Chief Bigelow has contributed significantly to wildfire prevention and preparedness, spearheading technological innovations such as the Online Burn Permit process and CALFIRS system. He is an active member of several committees and boards, including the California Fire Safe Council and CAL POLY WUI Fire Institute, and also teaches for the State Fire Marshal and CSTI. With his expertise in GIS and collaborative leadership, Chief Bigelow plays a crucial role in advancing CAL FIRE's mission to protect California’s communities and natural resources.
