During active death, such as during cardiac arrest or severe trauma, the human nervous system can generate extremely vivid and memorable experiences if successfully resuscitated. These are transformative visions and sensations that have changed the lives of those who experience them. For this reason, near-death experiences, also known as near-death experiences (NDEs) or transcendent recalled experiences of death, have long been associated with metaphysical or supernatural causes. However, recent developments in scientific research indicate that these experiences have a neurophysiological basis, making them explicable through the scientific method, within the framework of the science of consciousness. One of the mechanisms proposed to explain NDEs is the so-called "electrical surge," or a sharp increase in brain electrical activity, which occurs shortly before the electroencephalogram (EEG) flatlines. This phenomenon has been observed in rats, where a sudden increase in electrical activity in the brain was noted immediately after cardiac arrest, and in more or less neurologically intact patients who, for various reasons, had reached the point where life support had to be withdrawn. One of the most significant studies on this topic was conducted by Dr. Sam Parnia, a specialist in resuscitation and near-death experience research. His work explored the persistence of brain activity and consciousness in people resuscitated after in- and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. His studies suggest that some awareness and brain activity can persist for up to 60 minutes in conditions of cardiac arrest and concomitant resuscitation. This may explain the detailed experiences reported by those who were near death and subsequently resuscitated.
