Originally, the region belonged to the parish of Schorbach, and Bitche was just a small, developing center. After the Thirty Years' War, the population increased, and the priest moved to Bitche, which grew in importance thanks to its garrison and fortifications. First Church (17th Century) A first church was built around 1683-1684 at the foot of the citadel because the existing chapel was too small. It was partly financed by the inhabitants and became the town's religious center. Reconstruction in the 18th Century With the growing population, the church quickly became too small and fell into disrepair. It was closed for worship around 1740, and a reconstruction was then undertaken. After a lawsuit against Sturzelbronn Abbey, the abbey contributed financially. The new church was rebuilt on the same site and consecrated in 1775. Modern Development In 1802, Bitche officially became an important parish (archpriest's seat). The church was subsequently modified and enriched over time (furniture, organ, stained-glass windows). A distinctive feature: the nave of the church is pillarless, which is quite rare and creates a great sense of spaciousness.
