Selling $1.8 Watermelons: The Illegal Street Vendors Fighting to Survive in China

Would you believe that you can buy a whole, 20lb sweet watermelon in China for just $1.80? While inflation and the cost of living soar globally, China’s streets are flooded with incredibly cheap summer fruits. But how is this possible, and who is paying the real price for this price miracle? In this episode, we follow Devin, a young street vendor trying to make a living by selling watermelons from the back of his truck. For some, these cheap melons are a sweet summer treat; for Devin, they are a desperate gamble to survive. As we track his daily grind from the early morning farms to the late-night city streets, we witness the harsh reality of China’s urban management. When the city authorities (Chengguan) suddenly clamp down, Devin’s fragile dream and sole source of income are instantly shut down. This is not just a video about cheap food. It is a raw, first-person look at the invisible cost of survival on the margins of China’s booming cities.
