Building a Wrapped Sapwood Mitered Dovetail Arm Table

One disadvantage of traditional dovetails is they don't allow for grain continuity across the joint. This problem can be solved by using a special dovetail called a mitered dovetail. With this kind of joint there is grain continuity across a mitered joint at the edges with the classy dovetail look in the middle. In this video I demonstrate the joint by building a couch arm table out of walnut. I chose a piece of walnut with bright sapwood on the edges to emphasize the grain continuity across the joint. This relatively simple build took me only a few hours and was completed with minimal use of power tools. I used a power thickness planer and a table saw for one step of the process, and a bandsaw for one quick cut that was proving difficult with my Japanese ryoba saw. Otherwise the only tools used are handplanes, chisels, and hand saws. I finished the piece with several coats of Arm-R-Seal wipe on polyurethane, which is my favorite durable finish though it takes several days to get enough coats on, with light sanding in between each coat.
