Purple bamboo grew in the southern land, and was carved into the singing xiao. Its clear joints align with the stars of heaven; plain bronze bands gird its slender waist. Tall as a jade tree standing in stillness, it rests full within the hand, deep and quietly bright. A hidden light gathers there, a violet vapor; a mirror of ice, reflecting the clear night. The cold spring tries its first note; the pines and clouds answer of themselves, in harmony. Metal and stone carry an ancient meaning; the notes of court and market rise together like a tide. Within a single breath, heaven and earth gather into the smallest of spaces. Its breath reaches through to the snows of Kunlun; its sound stirs the silk spun by the mermaid's hand. Where the xiao and the sword walk side by side, ten thousand ranges of pine-clad mountains fade into distance. Sound as though there were no sound at all; free of all dust, clear and bright of itself. One instrument answers the first vow ever made; the jade-green sky shines down upon my heart.
