I walked you to the bamboo fence, an herbal pouch fragrant in my sleeve. I meant to say, “The road is long— take this to ward off wind and cold.” Yet when I spoke, all I could say was: “The forsythia can withstand the drought.” You reined in your horse and looked back, bowing deeply through the rain: “When the flowers bloom someday, please look after them for me.” With lowered eyes, I tied the green pouch quietly to your saddle. Morning rain dissolved into mist; the willows by the southern cottage gleamed anew. Rain darkened the sleeves of your blue robe— who could have known the tidings of spring? Again you reined in; again you turned: “When the flowers bloom…” Rain filled the empty mountains; your voice broke among the cold poplars. Hasten on, hasten on— the long road leads across passes and fords. How sorrowful, to have this body bound to duty. Through hardship, through hardship, take care of yourself— take care of yourself.
