Build Movement & Depth with Layered Color | Abstract Painting Technique

In this abstract painting technique demo, I’m exploring how to build movement and depth with layered color using a simple limited palette of Light Blue Permanent, Naples Yellow, and Vermillion. This 20-minute prompt focuses on warm and cool color relationships, directional brushwork, soft transitions, and layered marks to create an intuitive abstract painting with energy and atmosphere. Before starting the painting, I do a quick color mixing test to see what kinds of colors, values, tints, and neutrals I can create from this limited palette. That quick study helps guide the painting process and gives me a better sense of how the colors might interact once they’re layered on the surface. In the demo, I mainly use a #12 filbert brush, a color shaper, crumpled newspaper, and a little charcoal to build texture, movement, and depth. The warm Vermillion and Naples Yellow areas move through a cooler Light Blue Permanent field, creating a sweeping abstract form that becomes the focal point of the piece. I also talk about how warm colors can feel like they come forward while cool colors often recede, and how showing the painting in black and white helps us check the value structure underneath the color. If you enjoy intuitive abstract painting, layered color techniques, limited palette painting, and abstract art prompts, I hope this demo gives you a few ideas to try in your own work.
