#cosmos #universe #science #physics The universe is doomed — and there are five scientifically grounded scenarios for its end. In this video, we explore each of these apocalyptic possibilities. The video is based primarily on theoretical cosmologist Katie Mack’s book "The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking)". Katie researches dark matter, vacuum decay, and the Epoch of Reionization. I haven’t found a more fascinating book on this subject. What’s in the video: 00:00 - The Birth of the Universe: the first moments of the Big Bang 01:24 - The Inevitability of the End: why the universe cannot exist forever 02:09 - Dark Energy: the mysterious force accelerating expansion 05:28 - The End of the Universe: 5 scenarios of cosmic apocalypse 07:01 - Time Travel: how we see the past of the cosmos 10:00 - Can We See the Big Bang? The answer: yes. 10:47 - A Map of the Infant Universe: the discovery of the cosmic microwave background 14:16 - Planck Time: the first 10⁻⁴³ seconds of the universe’s life 14:54 - Cosmic Inflation: the universe expanded in an instant 17:43 - The Collision of the Milky Way and Andromeda 19:42 - SCENARIO 1: The Big Crunch - the fiery collapse of a cyclic universe 22:13 - Dark Matter: the invisible framework of the universe 24:50 - SCENARIO 2: Heat Death - maximum entropy and the end of time 26:44 - 3 Types of Universes: closed, flat, and open 30:17 - The Cosmological Constant: Einstein’s “greatest blunder” 33:16 - Black Holes Evaporate: Hawking’s discovery 34:27 - Entropy and the Arrow of Time: why everything falls apart 36:52 - The Black Hole Information Paradox: where does the information go? 43:11 - The Boltzmann Brain: you may be nothing more than a fluctuation in the void 50:00 - SCENARIO 3: The Big Rip - space itself is torn apart 55:21 - SCENARIO 4: Vacuum Decay - a bubble of death 57:43 - The Higgs Boson and the Instability of Our Existence 1:00:31 - Could the Large Hadron Collider Have Destroyed the World? 1:02:14 - The Higgs Vacuum Is Unstable. We may be living in a false vacuum 1:06:04 - Quantum Tunneling Through a Barrier 1:10:35 - The Discovery of Gravitational Waves 1:14:02 - SCENARIO 5: The Big Bounce - collision with a parallel universe 1:15:20 - The Ekpyrotic Universe - collisions of branes Short summary: 13.8 billion years ago, space, time, and matter came into existence with the Big Bang. Today, physicists know that the universe cannot last forever. Dark energy is accelerating the expansion of the cosmos, and by studying the cosmic microwave background and observing distant galaxies, scientists reconstruct its past and outline possible futures. These scenarios are based on modern insights from quantum mechanics, relativity, and cosmology. These scenarios include the Big Crunch, if gravity someday regains the upper hand; Heat Death, driven by endless expansion; the Big Rip, caused by extremely unstable dark energy; and vacuum decay, in which a bubble of true vacuum could destroy everything. But there is also a more hopeful possibility: the Big Bounce in a cyclic universe, where the Big Bang was not the absolute beginning, but the result of a collision with a parallel universe.
