How-To: Oil 101 - Monochromatic Painting, Step-By-Step

A first year college painting class is an intensive learning venture where you become immersed in your painting medium. Without this proper beginning, it can seem overwhelming-- trying to get used to the tools is hard enough, but to add color on top of it can seem a bit overwhelming! How do professors generally start students out? By having them execute their first work as a monochromatic painting; using only 1 color or hue. If you recall, ‘hue’, means the color you get straight out of the tube. This teaches the eye to learn value and color mixing, while getting used to the different sizes and brush shapes (and the texture of their chosen substrate under the brush). In this episode, Amy will demonstrate a monochromatic painting, using Burnt Sienna. She'll use Black for shading and white for Tinting and making the color lighter.
