Hello everyone! while it's been a minute, here are some of the recordings from my junior recital! It was a huge undertaking, from the designing of the outfit, to the fun and inclusive song selections, to the photo shoot, and to all the hard working people making it a full event!! Thank you for making me feel like a star :) The Habanera, or L’amour est un oiseau rebelle, is one of those pieces everyone knows in some capacity. It comes from Bizet’s Carmen and is sung by the title character. Its iconic rhythm is rooted in Afro-Cuban musical traditions, specifically the Habanera, a dance that emerged from Havana’s port culture. This rhythmic style embodies the idea of Ida y Vuelta (going and returning), mirroring Carmen’s free-spirited nature as a traveler and smuggler. While settling in the quaint town of Seville to recharge, Carmen works at a cigarette factory where men eagerly gather to admire her. As she emerges from her shift, they beg for her love, prompting this iconic aria. In the Habanera, Carmen compares love to a rebellious bird that is uncontrollable and fleeting. She warns that if she ever truly loves someone, they should beware. This aria holds a special place in my heart. Carmen was one of the first operas that made me fall in love with the art form. I admire Carmen’s strength, cunning, and unwavering commitment to her beliefs.
