Cuba is experiencing widespread power outages due to depleted fuel reserves, severely impacting medical care and public health, and Yamazoe requested further humanitarian assistance. Regarding the "lifting of the embargo on Cuba" resolution adopted at the UN General Assembly last October, with Japan's support, he emphasized that it takes into account the principles of the UN Charter and international law, which stipulate sovereign equality and non-interference in internal affairs. He pointed out that US President Trump's suggestion of military operation against Cuba is a serious matter and emphasized that "a diplomatic and peaceful solution is necessary." In April, the leaders of Brazil, Mexico, and Spain issued a joint statement calling for a resolution to the Cuban issue through serious and respectful dialogue in accordance with international law, and urged the Japanese government to also approach the issue with a peaceful resolution as its premise. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi responded that "it is important to resolve issues between nations through diplomacy." Mr. Yamazoe pointed out that while the U.S. Department of Justice indicted former Cuban President Fidel Castro in May, the U.S. has similarly indicted the head of state of a country it is trying to overthrow in Venezuela. Regarding Foreign Minister Motegi's statement that he would "refrain from commenting" on the U.S. military operation in January to detain President Maduro in Venezuela, Mr. Yamazoe sharply criticized him, asking, "Does this mean you condone the detention and abduction of leaders through military attack?" Mr. Yamazoe stated that upholding the rule of law is necessary to prevent "peace through force," and demanded that "it should be declared that military intervention in Cuba, as well as the invasion of Venezuela, is unacceptable."
