Changing the timing belt is a delicate process, and something as basic as skipping a tooth on the sprocket when installing the belt can cause: 🚗 In engines with interference (like the 1.6 HDi DV6 in the Citroën C4 Picasso): The valves can collide with the pistons because you lose the synchronization between the camshaft and the crankshaft. Result: bent valves, damaged pistons, a wrecked cylinder head... and a totaled engine. In other words: you can go from a simple starting problem to a completely ruined engine if you push it too hard. 🚗 In non-interfering engines (very few these days): The car might simply not start or run erratically (jerking, backfiring, strange smoke, loss of power). Even so, continuing to drive it like this will eventually damage sensors, the catalytic converter, and other components.
