Today, we made "Piggy Porridge" (Kkulkkuli-juk), a tearful meal of survival that Korean War refugees made by boiling leftovers from US military bases. Many people think it's similar to Budae-jjigae (Army Stew). However, unlike Budae-jjigae, which is cooked with proper ingredients, Piggy Porridge was extremely unhygienic, literally made by collecting actual food waste. To understand even a fraction of the desperate struggle for survival that the refugees had to endure, we historically recreated the "true Piggy Porridge" by adding cigarette butts and chewed gum, which were often found mixed into the food back then. Experiencing the shocking smell and taste of melted mint gum firsthand truly makes us realize the preciousness of the warm and abundant meals we enjoy today.
