TR42 "Red Rock" Descent & Oaks (Fort Ord)
Dropping in for a fast, raw audio edit tackling Trail 42 (TR42) at Fort Ord National Monument. As you can see from the map layout in TR42.jpg, this run kicks off with a punchy climb up Three Sisters Road before dropping into the alternate entry, sending us navigating a labyrinth of tight, winding switchbacks through the oak canopy before bottoming out at Skyline Road. Location: Fort Ord National Monument, CA Route: Jacks/Three Sisters Junction ➡️ Three Sisters Climb ➡️ TR42 Alternate Entry ➡️ Skyline Road Bike: Specialized Turbo Levo Comp Carbon Camera: GoPro Hero 3 Style: Pure trail audio. No music, no commentary—just the raw sound of knobby tires digging into loose gravel and sandstone, the suspension working, and the hub buzzing. The Ride Experience The edit begins at the intersection of Jacks Road and Three Sisters Road, immediately putting the eMTB power to work up the steep, loose gravel incline of the first "Sister". Right at the crest, we peel off onto the newer Trail 42 Alternate Entrance. This section starts with a quick drop that feeds right into a set of tight, quick s-turns carved through the brush. Once we merge onto the main line of TR42, the trail gets incredibly technical. As mapped out in TR42.jpg, the middle section is packed with a sequence of sharp, hairpin switchbacks that require heavy braking, precise line choice, and quick lean angles. You plunge directly into a dense, winding canopy of coast live oaks where the trail snakes back and forth across the hillside. With high speeds on the straights, sharp blind corners beneath the trees, and deep sandy ruts, the trail bell is active to keep the multi-use path safe. The run wraps up with a final series of looping curves that spit you right out at the Skyline Road junction.
