The problem with oversampled clippers (and why I prefer KClip 3)
In this video, I do a deep dive into the potential problems with oversampling in a clipper (or any type of non-linear processing such as limiting, saturation, distortion, and compression). I also explain and demonstrate why I recommend KClip 3 above all other clippers for the goal of dynamic range control and loudness. (With one exception being Newfangled Saturate, but that's a subject for another video coming soon.) Note: This video isn't strictly one of the "Mixing Loud with CTZ" episodes, because it's of general interest to anyone using clippers. But I am including this in the playlist for that series because the subject matter is also very related to the CTZ strategy and why I recommend KClip as the main clipper for CTZ gainstaging and workflow. 0:00 - In this video 8:17 - If you need a crash course in Oversampling 11:18 - Yep, I made a boo-boo 17:14 - Why I prefer workflow in KClip 26:51 - Why I prefer oversampling in KClip 38:12 - How aliasing is perceived in dynamic range control 49:29 - How oversampling messes up dynamic range control 53:52 - Why oversampling might not sound "good" 57:44 - When is it useful to try oversampled clipping? 1:00:07 - When is it useful to try a different clipper or limiter? 1:04:15 - Caveats about oversampling for COLORED saturation Link to Dan Worrall's video explaining how sampling rate and oversampling works, and demonstrating how aliasing is often VERY subtle and not worth obsessing about: • Samplerates: The Higher the Better, Right?
