Since the characteristics themselves remain, prioritizing measures to combat fatigue and environmental adjustments is key. The bottom line is that, due to the characteristics of HSPs, fatigue is unavoidable. However, by accepting this and taking appropriate measures to combat fatigue, you can live a better life. First, let's take a look at what HSPs are. HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) is a concept coined by psychologist Dr. Elaine Aron, meaning "highly sensitive person." This is not a disease or disorder, but rather an innate temperament that affects approximately 15-20% of the population. While not a medical diagnosis, it is said to share many similarities with innate anxiety disorders. HSPs have four key characteristics, known as "DOES." First, they are characterized by "deep thinking," meaning they think deeply about things and process information thoroughly. Second, they are "hypersensitive to stimuli," meaning they are easily overwhelmed by strong stimuli such as light, sound, and emotions, and tend to tire easily. Third, they are "highly empathetic," meaning they deeply empathize with and are easily influenced by the emotions of others. Fourth, they are "highly sensitive," meaning they are easily aware of and easily bothered by even the smallest details. (2) Fatigue and its Effects in HSPs HSPs face three main challenges in their daily lives. First, they are easily caught up in other people's emotions and problems. Their high level of empathy can lead them to become deeply involved in others' emotions and problems, causing them to suffer as if they were their own. Second, they experience "extreme fatigue." Constantly processing large amounts of information and being exposed to stimuli can easily exhaust both the body and mind. This also increases the risk of developing comorbid mental illness. Chronic fatigue and stress increase the risk of developing depression, anxiety disorders, insomnia, and other conditions. HSPs' fatigue is characterized by a tendency toward mental fatigue. First, they are prone to mental fatigue. They are acutely aware of the moods and expectations of those around them and unconsciously try to adapt, resulting in mental fatigue. They also suffer from severe workplace fatigue. A stimulating work environment and high pressure can cause excessive energy loss, making it difficult to continue working. Furthermore, chronic fatigue and stress can increase the risk of mental disorders such as depression. There are three factors behind this fatigue. HSPs' hypersensitivity, due to their heightened senses, can cause excessive stimulation even in ordinary environments, leading to nervous system exhaustion. Empathy for others blurs the emotional boundaries between them, allowing the emotions of others to flow in and drain their energy. HSPs tend to "deeply process information," or overthink, and are particularly prone to rumination, which causes the brain to constantly overwork and become mentally exhausted. The impact of this fatigue is serious. In terms of work and life, chronic fatigue impairs concentration and judgment, making them more susceptible to burnout. Physically, continued tension can cause various physical symptoms, such as headaches and digestive problems. Mentally, persistent fatigue and stress can lead to or worsen mental illnesses such as depression and insomnia. (3) What should HSPs do if they tire easily? We suggest three basic approaches to addressing fatigue: thorough fatigue management, environmental adjustments, and, if necessary, treatment for mental illnesses. ① Thorough Fatigue Management It is important for HSPs to understand that their everyday lives are a state of overstimulation. It is natural for them to become tired if they continue to do the same things over and over again. Therefore, consc...
