Science is getting ever closer to solving the mystery of the origin of life. And not just a theoretical solution, which has already been roughly achieved, but a practical one. That is, the ability to reproduce the entire process of abiogenesis in the laboratory, under conditions similar to those that existed on the young Earth. In just the last couple of years, scientists have made several breakthrough discoveries that have made the chances of quickly solving this problem far more realistic than previously thought. Alexander Markov's lecture describes three such studies. These discoveries demonstrate how events that seemed almost improbable could actually have occurred quite easily under conditions that existed in volcanic reservoirs on ancient protocontinents.
