#NotoPeninsulaEarthquake #JapanPlatform #PetSupport Japan Platform (JPF) dispatched a public relations camera team to the affected areas to report on the damage and relief efforts following the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on January 1, 2024. We will report on the situation across the Noto Peninsula. *This is an introduction to the activities of a JPF member NGO (not currently a JPF project). Part 5: "Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture: Support Activities for Disaster-Affected Pets" Support from the Japan Rescue Association (JRA) As of January 7, over 2,000 people are sheltering in 35 evacuation shelters in Nanao City. The Japan Rescue Association (JRA), a JPF member organization providing support for pets affected by the disaster, is visiting each evacuation shelter, checking on the pets' status and providing assistance tailored to their needs. At the evacuation shelter at Nakajima Elementary School in Nanao City, several dogs and cats are evacuating with their owners. Affected residents with pets are staying with them in classrooms on the second floor, separate from the general public. Amidst all this, Benkei the Shiba Inu was tied up in a cold area by the entrance. Benkei is very friendly and loved by many residents, who play with and feed him as they pass by. However, because the entrance was cold, JRA staff consulted with his owner and decided to move Benkei indoors, providing him with a warm cage. They also provided relief supplies such as pet food and litter boxes for other dogs and cats. Some evacuation shelters do not allow pets, so many owners are sleeping with their pets in their cars or in their damaged homes.
