How to Make Cyanotype Inspired Art in Procreate: No Sun Required
Create a cyanotype inspired artwork in Procreate, no sun or chemicals needed. I'll show you how to build dreamy Prussian blue ferns with soft, sunlit halos using my Pattern Decay brush set. Cyanotype is a photographic process where a light sensitive solution is exposed to sunlight, turning everything a deep Prussian blue while covered areas stay pale. In this tutorial we recreate that look digitally with grungy textures, layered ferns, and a little blur to get that chemically treated glow. You're welcome to follow along exactly, or use any brushes and objects you'd like to try. 00:00 Intro 00:55 Make a new canvas 01:25 Change the background color 02:35 Add texture to the background 05:12 Add ferns 06:41 Erase any unwanted parts 07:22 Add a halo around the ferns 09:27 Add a fern halo in the empty space 11:05 Add additional patterns 14:50 Add depth with blur 18:26 Lighten some edges 20:27 Optional opacity and color adjustments 21:58 Outro You'll learn how to: Set up a textured cyanotype background with blur and noise Layer realistic ferns using pressure for depth Create soft halos with alpha lock and Gaussian blur Add complementary letterpress textures without overpowering your focal point Adjust color and opacity for a lighter or moodier finish This project is great for slow, playful creative sessions and anyone drawn to botanical or vintage inspired digital art. Try it with a different palette for a completely different mood.
