Fiberglass and Gelcoat Make This Boat Look Brand New! - Panga Upgrade Part 4
In Part 4 of our Panga Upgrade Series we are finally ready to fiberglass the deck and gelcoat the whole inside. If you are just finding this video, we've come a long way restoring this 22' Mexican-Made Argos Panga. Watch Part 1, to see where we started with a marketplace aluminum top which we converted to custom fit. Parts 2 and 3 show all of the repairs and modifications we completed to get us to where we are now. In part 3 we finished with a painted rail which was a preview of the transformation soon to come. We jump right into sanding and prepping the deck and gunnels for a layer of fiberglass on the floor. It takes us a full day using chopstrand mat and polyester resin to complete this job. The next day we begin by getting the fresh glass sanded and ready to gelcoat. But first we need to cover the gunnels (which show some epoxy awlfair after sanding) and our epoxy repairs with a tie coat of vinyl-ester resin to ensure the polyester gelcoat will properly adhere. Then is right on to gel-coat. We use an unwaxed white gelcoat base over the entire interior excluding under where the console will be and in the bilge under the seat. Next we apply a second thick layer of waxed white gelcoat followed by waxed grey and sea foam gelcoat sprayed splatters. The following day Asheton surprises Carly with a mocked up console which is now ready to install. First off Asheton finished off the bilge area under the seat with grey gelcoat and seafoam splatters. Our last project of the day is fiberglassing the console into place. In our next video we will finish up this project by rigging, running wires, and towing the panga to Florida where we will install our engine. This is part 4 of a multi-part series, so make sure to watch part 1, 2 and 3 if you missed it and the next episodes to see how the Panga turns out! Here's what we used: -Vinyl Ester Resin by Fiberglass Supply Depot -Unwaxed and Waxed Gelcoat -Acetone to wipe down surfaces prior to fiberglassing and gelcoat as well as cleaning up tools after.
