In 1998 in Laramie, Oklahoma, 21-year-old Matthew Shepard was beaten, tortured, tied to a fence and left to die. He was discovered 18 hours later and transported to a hospital where he clung to life in a coma until he died six days after the attack. There has never been a question of who killed Matthew. Two men - Aaron McKinney and Russell Handerson were convicted of the crime. The issue, in court, and after, was one of motive. Why DID these two men do what they did to Matthew Shepard? Was it a hate crime because Matthew was gay or was it a drug crime gone bad or was it a crime just for the fun of it? Or was it a mix of all three? How does motive make a difference at trial and in culture?
