While the brand is enjoying popularity fueled by increased demand for delivery, hygiene management at some locations has been found to be inadequate. As a result of an investigation by the Korea Consumer Agency into 20 major domestic Mala Tang franchises, food poisoning bacteria were detected at three locations. At Chun-Li Mala Tang's Myeongdong Main Branch, Staphylococcus aureus was found in the Mala Tang and Listeria in the peanut sauce. Additionally, Listeria and E. coli were detected in the peanut sauce at Xiangchi Mala's Ajou University branch and Shaolin Mala's Gajaeul branch. Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain; in particular, Listeria can increase the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth in pregnant women. However, I don't think the Consumer Agency would take it in for testing right away.] The Consumer Agency stated that for all 20 locations under investigation, the products were picked up directly from the store, placed in sterile bags, refrigerated, and then tested by an agency certified by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
