In today's class, Professor Ana explains the main types of social control, so you can nail the sociology questions on the Enem (National High School Exam) :D Check out our free course: https://goo.gl/2rebsa Class on this content: https://bit.ly/2ZgEPRa Life in Society: Groups and Social Relations - https://goo.gl/GPbhw4 Video Description: 00:00 to 00:13 - Teacher introduction and opening credits. 00:14 to 1:21 - You've probably had that basic existential crisis where you've wondered why we do things the way we do. All these patterns of acting and thinking are part of a social model that dictates how we carry them out. This model operates based on what we call "social control," which corresponds to a set of norms, laws, regulations, values, morals, beliefs, and other factors that constitute the apparatus of different elements that, together, order life in society. 1:22 to 2:09 - These norms are not always understood as social control because we rarely think about what makes us follow them. "Oh, it's always been like this" is a common phrase to describe standard everyday behaviors. However, such behaviors are part of a larger structure, which is not given, that is, it can change depending on the social context. 2:10 to 4:15 - There are two forms of social control: formal (laws, institutionalized regulations... example: if we run a red light, we receive a ticket, which is a form of social control) and informal (not part of the law, but which we learn and follow... example: school, church, media, and other dimensions that teach us how to act and think). 4:16 to 6:55 - Another way to observe social control is through its internal subdivision (a type of self-control, which occurs due to the existence of external factors—school, church, etc.—that tell us how to think and act) and external (external devices that control individuals' actions, such as the police, for example). 6:56 to 9:17 - All forms of social control serve to maintain an established standardized model, which we understand as universal—and which, after this lesson, we know is not. This cultural apparatus that shapes ways of acting and thinking is subject to transformation over time and geographically. Thus, social control is a device that can change.
