But, unfortunately, that's exactly what happened. The Astra OPC had no successor, but it certainly set a high bar, it has to be said. Designed as a "proper sporty Opel"—that is, plenty of engine power and a sharply sculpted rear end that wasn't prone to oversteer—it was a car capable enough to be considered a Grand Tourer while also being incredibly fast in acceleration. Equipped with advanced engineering, from magnetorheological dampers to a decoupled steering knuckle system, Opel dressed this car in one of the most striking, beautiful, and sporty bodies of any three-door compact ever made. Yes, it could have been more adjustable, lighter, more communicative... but all of that would have gone against Opel's way of doing things, accustomed as they are to offering a German-inspired approach, characterized by its stable handling and high cornering speed, also seen in Audi, for example. General Motors abandoned Opel, leaving the brand in Peugeot's hands, which took it on and completely changed its commercial strategy in the European market. Now we have the option of fondly remembering this great car which, if properly adjusted in terms of geometry and a few other details, becomes a truly fun and practical machine, fuel consumption aside.
