Shinran Shonin was the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. Most Japanese people are Buddhists. Jodo Shinshu is the most common form of Buddhism. The Tannisho (Lamentations of the Anonymity of Shinran Shonin) is said to have been written by Yuien, a senior disciple of Shinran Shonin. After Shinran Shonin's death, some people began spreading misinformation that differed from what he had taught. The Tannisho lamented these errors and attempted to correct them. The Three Great Classical Japanese Literary Works: "Hojoki" (by Kamo no Chōmei) "Tannisho" "Tsurezuregusa" (by Yoshida Kenkō) Completed approximately 60 years apart. The Iwanami Bunko edition of the Tannisho has sold over 1.2 million copies. Many people have been deeply moved by the Tannisho. Kitaro Nishida: "Even if all books were destroyed by fire, I could bear it as long as the Tannisho remained." Kiyoshi Miki: "If I had to choose just one book from among tens of thousands of books, I would choose the *Tannisho*." Ryotaro Shiba: "If I could take one book to a desert island, I would choose the *Tannisho*." For more information about the *Tannisho*, please see the following page. [Heidegger's Diary in Old Age] Today, I read the "Tannisho" by Shinran, the Eastern saint, for the first time through an English translation. "Considering Amida Buddha's vow of five kalpas of contemplation, it was solely for Shinran alone." (Postscript to the Tannisho) What a profound and insightful attitude! If I had known ten years ago that such a wonderful saint existed in the East, I wouldn't have studied Greek or Latin. I would have learned Japanese, listened to the saint's teachings, and made spreading them throughout the world my life's purpose. It was too late. Nearly 30 Japanese philosophers and thinkers came to study in Japan and became my disciples. It's not just that. We discussed many issues of thought and philosophy, but through those contacts, there wasn't even a hint that such wonderful thought existed in Japan. What are the Japanese people doing? Japan lost the war, and now they say they will contribute to world culture as a cultural nation, but if you ask me, we don't need magnificent buildings or works of art. We don't need anything else; we just want people to become human beings who embody the teachings of the saint. Whether in business, tourism, or politics, I hope that Japanese people will become individuals who exude an aura of profound wisdom that can be found in their interactions with others. Then, people all over the world will come to know of this teaching, and the French will embrace it through French, and the Danes through Danish, each making this teaching of the saint their own. At that moment, a clearer perspective on the issue of world peace will e...
