In the south of France, east of Marseille, after the creeks of Cassis, the "Route des Crêtes" ("road across the crests") takes you on a magnificent ride between the Gulf of Cassis and the Gulf of La Ciotat, with 360 degree views over some of the most superb scenery in Provence all along the way. It is one of the highest maritime cliffs (the dramatic Cap Canaille is a monumental 394 metre high slab of red-ochre rock that's the highest in France) in Europe and offers a superb panoramic view of the glittering Mediterranean. This 15 km stretch of road will take about half an hour by car and about an hour by bicycle, if you don't stop. But I can guarantee that you will definitely want to stop !
