Water table on the LOWER level 🟢 M2 🟢 The M2 line is a Milan metro line that connects the city from the northeast, with two termini in Cologno Nord (in the municipality of Cologno Monzese) and Gessate (in the municipality of Gessate), to the south, terminating at the two termini in Piazza Abbiategrasso (in the municipality of Milan) and Assago Forum (in the municipality of Assago). It is nicknamed the "green line" because of the color it is drawn on maps. Green is also the primary color used in the decoration of stations and trains. With almost 40 km of length and 35 stations, the M2 is the longest metro line in Milan and Italy, and one of the longest in Europe. It is currently the only Milan metro line with surface sections, between Cimiano and the two termini of Gessate and Cologno Nord, and on the branch line between Famagosta and the Assago Milano Fiori Forum terminus. The station was inaugurated on October 30, 1983, at the same time as the new section to Porta Genova FS. With the opening on October 12 of the M4 line to San Cristoforo, the Coni Zugna station was built nearby. The tracks are laid on two levels, one above the other; this technique made it possible to avoid passing under buildings and was an experiment in preparation for the construction of the M3 line, whose tunnels run one above the other for a long stretch through the historic center. Sant'Agostino is one of the deepest metro stations: this, combined with the leaky tunnels of the M2 line, causes constant water infiltration. Due to the rising water table, pumps have been installed in the lower tunnel to prevent flooding. However, these infiltrations do not compromise the structural integrity of the station.
