However, as we'll see shortly, these challenges are often more psychological than practical, since driving uphill doesn't require anything special, other than practicing what you already know. If the slope is only a slight one, you won't need to do anything different, as the car will be able to climb it without any difficulty. However, things change when the slope becomes more significant. Do you know the main difference, when driving a vehicle with a manual transmission, between driving up a gentle slope and a steep one? This is the gear to use. If the road has a MINIMUM uphill gradient, our vehicle, even if it isn't very powerful, will be able to climb it, even in a high gear, such as fourth. But if the gradient increases, the car may begin to have difficulty moving forward in a high gear; if this is the case, we'll notice it because the speed will begin to decrease, and won't increase even if we press the accelerator harder. This means the car is having trouble climbing. Resolving this situation is very simple: just shift into a lower gear. If we're in fourth, try shifting down to third to see what happens: if the car manages to pick up speed again, we've solved the problem. If the car is having difficulty even in third, then shift into an even lower gear, namely second. With this gear, even very steep hills can be climbed. But if the gradient is even steeper, the car may not be able to climb even in second gear. So, in this case, there's only one last solution: shift into the lowest gear possible, first. Rest assured, the car will handle virtually any type of hill in this gear. If we find ourselves facing a curve on a slope, perhaps a rather tight one, a typical mountain hairpin bend, requiring us to drive at very low speed, we'll need to shift into the correct gear, almost certainly second, BEFORE entering the curve. This will prevent the car from struggling at a crucial moment, namely when cornering. At this point, it's better to keep both hands on the steering wheel rather than having one on the gear lever, busy shifting into a lower gear because the car can't cope with the current gear. The other thing to keep in mind when driving uphill is that, before shifting to the next gear, you'll necessarily need to accelerate a little more than normal in each individual gear, increasing the engine revs. This is because, when driving uphill, the car will lose a lot of speed from the moment we release the accelerator and press the clutch to shift. And if the speed is too low when releasing the clutch after shifting, the engine will drop too much, resulting in it stalling altogether. So, to summarize, when driving uphill, we should use a gear that's progressively smaller the steeper the road, and accelerate more than usual with each gear before shifting to the next. There's nothing else to watch out for. So you see, driving uphill isn't that challenging. More than anything, you'll need to get used to it to learn when the engine is struggling due to the gradient, and that's when it's time to shift to a lower gear—that's all.
