Piotr Szczepański's conversation with Jerzy Marek Nowakowski as part of the #universitytalks series [July 7, 2026] On May 25, 2026, first-year students of the Faculty of European Studies at the University of Warsaw organized a simulated Polish parliamentary session (plenary session) – a debate titled "Poland and the European Union in a Changing World." This is an extremely interesting initiative. The students invited MPs from all parties, but no one from the Civic Platform attended. This isn't the first time that activists from this party have taken issue with citizens. Well, pride comes before a fall. The most interesting statements were those made by the MPs regarding the European Union. Everyone can see that everything has changed – Europe and European countries, especially Poland, face existential challenges. Europe is 10 years after Brexit, and its consequences for the United Kingdom (UK) are visible and painful. Governments are changing (as they did in Italy, which is now a stable country), and the healthcare system, which was supposed to flourish with the savings, is still as weak as ever. Poles and other immigrants from Central Europe have left, replaced by new ones from Africa, which has only deepened the migration crisis (which Brexit was supposed to solve). There is a labor shortage, and farmers who supported leaving the EU are now demanding the same support they received during membership. Due to competition from the Global South – New Zealand and Australia – they have nowhere to sell their beef. The UK, a lonely country, is helpless in the face of tariffs imposed by Donald Trump and China. GDP losses translate into increasingly lower living standards… This situation caused the leaders of European right-wing parties to first stop talking about Frexit, Dexit, Nexit, and the end of the EU, and then to start arguing that the EU is here, but changes driven from within are needed. Now, in turn – like Giorgia Meloni – they are beginning to say that in these times we need a stronger EU to meet the challenges posed by China, the USA, Russia, and climate change. And here we come to the statements of Polish MPs during this student debate. It turns out that most of them completely fail to understand the changes taking place around us and in Europe itself, do not understand the meaning of trade agreements, and have no idea what is at stake. First-year students prepared their own resolution (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1K.... Many of its proposals are debatable, but the most valuable thing is that they themselves took the initiative to hold a meeting, had to prepare substantively, and thus demonstrated concern for their own future and that of the Republic of Poland. Now they should call for similar meetings and debates with students from other universities. This may be a path to disseminating knowledge about the contemporary world and a way to limit Russia's success in the disinformation war waged in Poland and Europe.
