Can A Beginner Draft Their Own Clothes?

One of the biggest questions I've had since learning to draft my own bodice and trouser blocks is: Can I actually design my own clothes? Although I have been sewing for only 10 months, I wanted to create a saree-inspired outfit that felt more like me: all the elegance of a saree, but with the comfort and practicality of trousers. Rather than following a commercial pattern, I started with my own bodice and trouser blocks and worked through the design from scratch. There was plenty of experimenting along the way. I rotated darts, played with pleats, adjusted the fit, and discovered that the ideas in your head don't always behave the same way once they're on a real body. In this video, I share the design process, the decisions that worked, the ones that didn't, and how I approached solving each problem as I went. What surprised me most wasn't that everything worked perfectly—it definitely didn't. It was that every challenge felt solvable. This project has completely changed the way I think about sewing. Instead of wondering whether a pattern exists, I now find myself wondering how a garment was designed and whether I could create my own version.
