〜巨大な軍隊を撤退させた小さな国のお話〜 あなたの中にある、とてつもない力について | Natsuko Hirota | TEDxNagoyaU
The blue sea near the equator, children with beaming smiles. At first glance, East Timor seems like paradise, but until 1999, it was hell. Immediately after declaring independence from Portugal, it was suddenly subjected to a military invasion by a neighboring country, and one in three people lost their lives. While it was whispered that "it would be a miracle" to withdraw a massive army and achieve independence, the people refused to give up, continued dialogue, and finally, the army withdrew. Repeated torture and massacres. What the people witnessed was a scene from hell. But even so, they say: Humans are worthy of belief. To make this world a better place, each and every one of us must fearlessly follow our own path. You have tremendous power within you. Cherish the feelings that well up from deep within you, and go find your companions. Natsuko Hirota. Having lost the forest she loved since childhood due to housing development, she deepened her interest in the cultures of indigenous peoples who coexist with nature. While traveling through North America, Asia, Polynesia, and other regions, she encountered East Timor. In 2002, she participated in a concert at the country's independence ceremony. She learned the local language, visited remote mountain areas for research, and her findings were compiled into the film "Canta! Timor," released in 2012. Her major was Spanish. She graduated from Nanzan University in 2002. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
