Searching for the Lost Squirrels of Britain on this Remote Island

Hey everyone, thanks for watching this episode of The Wellstead! 🌳 In this video, I travel to a small island off the coast of England to search for one of the last remaining populations of Red Squirrels in Britain. Since the 19th century, the number of Red Squirrels in Britain has been declining after the introduction of the invasive and aggressive North American Grey Squirrel to the British Isles. Due to a number of factors like competition, aggression, and disease, Red Squirrels are now confined to small, isolated communities on islands like this one, or in secluded valleys and remote forests in the north of England, as well as in Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. There are a number of conservation projects around the country working to breed Red Squirrels in preparation for future reintroductions, but for now they can only be found in rare sites like this where they are protected from the threat of grey squirrels.
