Muir Valley Nature Preserve: Horseshoe Falls & Nellie’s Falls & Pizza at Miguel’s

Tucked away in the heart of Kentucky’s Red River Gorge, Muir Valley Nature Preserve is a hidden gem known for its breathtaking scenery, peaceful trails, and world-class rock climbing. On this hike, I made our way to two beautiful waterfalls—Horseshoe Falls and Nellie’s Falls. Horseshoe Falls stands at around 30 feet tall, gracefully cascading over a curved rock ledge, while Nellie’s Falls drops roughly 40 feet, creating a stunning and serene backdrop deep in the forest. Along the trail, we even spotted an owl, which made the experience feel even more magical. Muir Valley has an inspiring story—it was once private land before being purchased and protected in 2012 by a nonprofit organization dedicated to conservation and recreation. Today, it’s not only a peaceful place to hike but also one of the top rock climbing destinations in the region, with hundreds of bolted routes drawing climbers from all over.
