Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica's off-path Caribbean paradise

Puerto Viejo: Caribbean beaches and tropical jungles make for a perfect off grid getaway. For a unique Costa Rican get-away it’s hard to imagine a better place than the country's relatively-isolated and under-traveled Caribbean coast. I’ve come to Puerto Viejo, where I’ve settled into a place on the outskirts of town, the Hidden Jungle Beach House, whose name tells you everything you need to know. (Instead of roosters, you wake up to howler monkeys.) Afro-Caribbeans who came here from Jamaica 150 years ago to build a railroad for hauling bananas greatly influence the food and music one finds here. Besides Ticos (as those of Costa Rica’s dominant Spanish culture are referred to) there are also indigenous people (most notably, the BriBri) and, last but not least, expats, many of them European. The draw: a paradise of jungle and beaches thankfully still off the grid of mainstream international sun seekers. Besides Puerto Viejo's rustic, laid-back charm and miles of beaches, one place no visitor should miss is Cahuita National Park on an unspoiled peninsula a 25-minute bus ride from town. Unlike the Pacific side, this region reflects a strong blend of African, Indigenous Bribri, and European influences, shaped by cacao farming, banana plantations, and the arrival of Jamaican workers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. English-based Creole, Spanish, and Indigenous traditions coexist here, giving the Caribbean coast a distinct cultural identity within Costa Rica. The Caribbean coastline around Puerto Viejo developed separately from much of Costa Rica due to its isolation by rainforest and mountains. Places to see in and near Puerto Viejo: The Town The cultural heart of the region, offering colorful streets, beachfront bars, live music, artisan markets, and easy access to nearby beaches. It is also a hub for surfing, yoga, and nightlife. Playa Cocles A popular beach just south of Puerto Viejo, known for strong waves, surfing, beach bars, and golden sand framed by palm trees. Playa Chiquita A quieter, scenic beach with calm coves and coral formations, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and a more relaxed atmosphere. Punta Uva Often considered one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches, featuring white sand, turquoise water, and excellent snorkeling during calm sea conditions. Cahuita National Park A coastal national park combining rainforest trails with coral reefs. Visitors can hike along the shoreline, spot wildlife such as sloths and monkeys, and snorkel among colorful fish and coral. Manzanillo & Gandoca–Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge A small fishing village and protected area at the southern end of the coast, known for pristine beaches, coral reefs, sea turtles, and rich marine biodiversity. Jaguar Rescue Center A well-known wildlife rehabilitation center that rescues and cares for injured and orphaned animals, offering educational tours focused on conservation. 🔴 Follow on Instagram:   / outbound_with_ron   🔴 Follow my Facebook Page:   / ronrusselloutbound   🔴 Visit my Website: https://www.outboundwithron.com/ ► Hit the POSTS tab for blog posts containing travel updates, information about places I visit and more.
