Sousse, Tunisia: souks and sand on the Mediterranean

Why Sousse on Tunisia's Mediterranean coast is a great addition to any Tunisia travel itinerary. If you were to be dropped into Sousse’s historic medina, or old town, you’d never guess that you were in a city of 750,000 people. But if you arrive by train as I did from the capital Tunis (150 kilometers north) and see the construction cranes that line the Mediterranean coastline here you quickly understand how much this 1,200-year-old city is expanding. Sousse is a geographically slender city sprawled next to the sea that’s both less gritty and projects a more relaxed vibe than the country’s capital. Settling into a stately early 20th-century hotel in the historic medina (the Hotel Medina, a relic of Tunisia’s French colonial past), I found Sousse to be a great place to kick back and an ideal base for day trips. And then there’s the city itself. From its souks and historic landmarks (the city's rabat, or early Arab mini-fortress, dates to the turn of the 800s) to the “modern” town outside the medina's walls, Sousse is a worthy addition to any Tunisian itinerary. Plus, a beach is rarely out of sight.
