How Designers Use IKEA Kitchen Cabinets to Build High-End Kitchens
Some of the most recognized kitchens ever published in Architectural Digest started with IKEA cabinet boxes. The cabinet box is infrastructure. What goes on top of it is design. That distinction changes everything. In this first installment of our new series, we look at three kitchens published in AD: a Victorian townhouse in north London restored by architect Anna Drakes, Athena Calderone's Amagansett beach house, and an Edinburgh home designed by architect Luke McClelland. All three started with IKEA cabinet boxes. None of them look like it. The through-line: the cabinet box is infrastructure. The stone, the hardware, the paint color, the proportions — that's where the design lives.
