Beta-blockers are no longer the first choice in hypertension treatment, but rather a group reserved for specialized clinical situations. However, they continue to play an indispensable role in conditions such as heart failure and arrhythmia. 🔴 Beta-blockers are no longer first-line medications in hypertension treatment. 🟡 They are used only in hypertensive patients with certain heart conditions. 🟢 They may be the first choice in conditions such as heart failure, post-heart attack, and arrhythmias. ⚠️ Generalizations should not be made: Atenolol data cannot be extrapolated to all beta-blockers. Beta-blockers were found to provide no clinical benefit in patients with preserved cardiac function (EF ≥ 50%) after a heart attack. Beta-blocker use may increase the risk of death, recurrence of a heart attack, and heart failure, especially in women. 🧬 Study Details Name: REBOOT (Randomized Evaluation of Beta-blocker Use Post-Myocardial Infarction) Participants: 8,505 patients, 109 hospitals (Spain and Italy) Method: Patients with normal EF after a heart attack were divided into two groups: beta-blocker and no beta-blocker. Follow-up: Mean 3.7 years REBOOT demonstrated that beta-blockers should not be routinely administered to patients with normal left ventricular function after a heart attack.
