Daily life in China | A CHINESE TEMPLE FAIR

Would you expect thousands of people to visit an outdoor fair when it is over 90°F? Today, I’m driving about 80 kilometers, or 50 miles, to Gaoping to experience a Chinese temple fair. Modern temple fairs are no longer just religious events. They are also huge community gatherings filled with street food, traditional crafts, clothing, toys, performances, and families spending the day together. Along the way, I’ll also show you how Chinese expressway toll lanes and service areas work. At the fair, we’ll try two giant meat skewers for 20 yuan, watch traditional Chinese paper-cutting, find fried grasshoppers, and meet a familiar childhood hero: Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. Even in the summer heat, the crowds never seem to slow down. I’m Hanghang.
