Unidade 29 – Gerúndio Simples e Ir + Gerúndio The gerúndio (gerund) in Portuguese is equivalent to the English -ing form of a verb. It is used to describe ongoing actions, circumstances, or ways of doing something. The structure ir + gerúndio expresses gradual, progressive, or continuous actions—something happening little by little. 1. Forming the Gerúndio Infinitive ending Infinitive Gerúndio English -ar falar falando speaking -er comer comendo eating -ir abrir abrindo opening Examples: Vão descendo que eu já vou. Keep coming down, I’m coming already. Indo de táxi é mais rápido. Going by taxi is faster. 2. Uses of the Gerúndio a) Replace a coordinated clause Assaltaram a casa e levaram todos os valores. They robbed the house and took all the valuables. Assaltaram a casa, levando todos os valores. They robbed the house, taking all the valuables. b) Express a circumstance of time Quando viu o carro, parou. When he saw the car, he stopped. Vendo o carro, parou. Seeing the car, he stopped. c) Indicate the manner Ele ouvia, com lágrimas nos olhos, o relato do acidente. He listened, with tears in his eyes, to the accident report. Ela ouvia, chorando, o relato do acidente. She listened, crying, to the accident report. 3. Gradual/ongoing action – “ir + gerúndio” This expresses progressive action happening little by little: Person Verb ir Example English eu vou Vou andando. I’m walking (gradually / little by little). tu vais Vais escrevendo. You’re writing (little by little). você vai Vai fazendo. You’re doing it gradually. nós vamos Vamos andando. We’re walking slowly/gradually. vocês vão Vão fazendo. You all are doing gradually. Examples: Vão andando que nós estamos quase prontos. Keep walking, we’re almost ready. Vai chamando o táxi que eu já desço. Call the taxi while I come down. Enquanto a mãe faz o almoço, a Ana vai pondo a mesa. While the mother makes lunch, Ana is gradually setting the table. Enquanto o professor não chega, os alunos vão lendo o texto. While the teacher hasn’t arrived, the students are reading the text little by little. 4. Gerúndio with regular actions / habits Quando chego a casa, ligo logo a televisão. When I get home, I immediately turn on the TV. Chegando a casa, ligo logo a televisão.
