Unidade 28 – Infinitivo Pessoal (Personal Infinitive) The infinitivo pessoal is a special form of the infinitive used when the subject of the verb is different from the subject of the main clause. It shows who is performing the action. 1. Examples with personal infinitive E melhor levarem os casacos. It’s better that you (plural) take the coats. Comprei um livro para tu leres. I bought a book for you to read. Ele disse-lhes para levarem os casacos. He told them to take the coats. Ele comprou um livro para o filho ler. He bought a book for his son to read. 2. Personal infinitive after impersonal expressions Use personal infinitive after expressions like É melhor, É preciso, É agradável: É melhor vocês levarem os casacos. It’s better that you (plural) take the coats. É preciso ires ao supermercado. It’s necessary for you to go to the supermarket. É agradável estarmos na esplanada. It’s nice for us to be on the terrace. 4. Personal infinitive after prepositions Ao ouvir as notícias, o Leonardo ficou preocupado. Upon hearing the news, Leonardo got worried. Comprei bilhetes para irmos ao cinema. I bought tickets for us to go to the cinema. Não te convidei, Jorge, por estares doente. I didn’t invite you, Jorge, because you are sick. Personal infinitive after prepositional phrases Li o livro antes de ver o filme. I read the book before watching the movie. Apesar de serem muito ricos, não gostam de gastar dinheiro. Quero acabar o bolo antes de chegarem os convidados. I want to finish the cake before the guests arrive. Depois de vocês partirem, arrumo a casa. After you (plural) leave, I tidy up the house.
