Lijden!! Ingrijpen of niet | Ineke Visser
What if the dying process is accompanied by pain and discomfort, by restlessness and fear? Do we intervene then, or do we let the natural process take its course? In this video, Ineke Visser looks with you at different perspectives on suffering, and at the question that, according to her, we have been avoiding for far too long: for whom are we actually doing this—that intervention? Ineke shows how media attention to euthanasia and palliative sedation can color our perception of the final phase of life, sometimes without us even realizing it. As a result, it can seem as if intervention is always *necessary*. She makes an important distinction between discomfort and suffering, and invites you to take a fresh look: a deathbed is sometimes confronting, but that does not automatically mean that something is wrong. With time, attention, good care, and appropriate pain management, a natural deathbed is bearable for many people, and intervention is not always necessary. At the same time, Ineke acknowledges how difficult it can be to remain present during pain and intense emotions. She shares an example from conversations surrounding a Nieuwsuur report on the increased use of palliative sedation, and shows how a shift in perspective at the deathbed can open up a different reality: respect, reverence, and the recognition of strengths and qualities that previously remained hidden.
