The Semi Slav is a defense to d4. It is one of the most popular ways for black to fight it. It’s solid, and considered to be one of the “main line openings”, meaning that it’s not risky or unsound. It is extremely versatile, and the middlegames which occur from it can be both positional and slow, and sharp and tactical in nature. That makes it one of the best openings for understanding every part and style of chess. It doesn’t restrain you to one type of positions like many simpler openings. It is very theoretical, and some variations of the Semi Slav have been worked out to a draw after 40 (!) moves. That means that it requires detailed study and a deep understanding if you want to become proficient in it. On the other hand, even a brief look into the opening and a short study of the main plans and ideas for both sides will enable you to play it without getting defeated early on. The Semi Slav is characterized by the very solid e6-d5-c6 pawn chain which makes black’s position very hard to break and allows black to have natural development. The only problem with the Semi Slav pawn triangle is that it blocks your c8 bishop in, making it almost impossible to develop it if you are unfamiliar with the theory or plans for black. In the main branching of the opening, white gets to choose between e3, leading to Meran positions that often tend to be positional in nature, and between Bg5, a move which almost unavoidably leads to sharp, tactical battles in which every tempo counts. The Semi Slav is a great opening and learning it will improve every aspect of your play! This was just an introductory video. In the videos to follow, I will cover all the main variations in great detail. I hope you enjoy the series! #chess
